Direct Access
Direct Access to Physical Therapy
Did you know you don't need a prescription to begin physical therapy? Virginia's Direct Access law allows patients to start physical therapy without first obtaining a referral from a physician.
What does "Direct Access" mean?
In 2008, Virginia passed a law allowing patients to be evaluated and treated by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy without first seeing a physician for a prescription. Virginia is one of many states that allows direct access to physical therapy.
What does this mean for you?
In the past, if you developed an orthopedic condition such as low back pain, you typically needed to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician before beginning physical therapy. This process could take days or even weeks, delaying treatment while your symptoms continued.
With Direct Access, you can schedule an appointment with Gainesville Physical Therapy and begin treatment sooner, helping address your pain before it worsens.
Your physical therapist will communicate their findings and treatment recommendations with your physician and make referrals when appropriate. If additional medical evaluation is needed, we will work closely with your healthcare team while continuing your therapy whenever appropriate. Our goal is to reduce your pain, restore function, and help you return to your normal activities as quickly and safely as possible.
