Manual Therapy

What Is Manual Therapy?

Manual therapy is a specialized, hands-on treatment performed by a skilled physical therapist to improve joint mobility, reduce pain, and restore movement. As an important component of physical therapy, manual therapy includes techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, manipulation, stretching, and other hands-on treatments designed to improve function and support recovery.

Preparing for Manual Therapy

Before beginning treatment, your physical therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation to assess your condition, joint mobility, strength, flexibility, and movement patterns. Based on these findings, an individualized treatment plan will be developed to address your specific injury, condition, or post-surgical rehabilitation needs.

Types of Manual Therapy

Passive Range of Motion (PROM)

Passive range of motion involves moving a joint through its available range of motion without active muscle contraction by the patient. This technique helps maintain joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and promote healing, particularly during the early stages of recovery following surgery or injury.

Manual Traction

Manual traction is commonly used to treat certain spine conditions, including herniated discs, pinched nerves, and degenerative changes. Gently applying controlled traction, your therapist helps reduce pressure on the spine and surrounding nerves, which may relieve pain and improve mobility.

Soft Tissue Mobilization

Soft tissue mobilization, including therapeutic massage techniques, involves skilled hands-on treatment of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues. These techniques help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, decrease pain, and promote tissue healing.

Joint Mobilization and Manipulation

Joint mobilization and manipulation use carefully controlled movements to improve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and restore normal movement. These techniques are often combined with therapeutic exercise as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for conditions affecting the spine and other joints.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle technique that helps reduce swelling by encouraging the movement of lymphatic fluid. It may be beneficial following surgery or injury, or for individuals experiencing persistent swelling that limits movement and function.

Benefits of Manual Therapy

Manual therapy may help:

  • Reduce pain and muscle tension
  • Decrease swelling and inflammation
  • Improve joint mobility and flexibility
  • Restore movement and physical function
  • Enhance recovery following injury or surgery
  • Improve overall quality of movement
